How Much Do I Need
Bunker Silos
Example size
Height (H): 3m
Length (L): 40 m
Width (W): 12 m

1. Wall Film
To cover the bunker walls, we recommend that you
chose a film that it 1.5 to 2 metres higher than the
walls, allowing 1 metre to cover the floor and 1 metre
to be folded on top of the silage.

2. Silostop top film (Orange/ Black/ Max/ White on Black)
We recommend that you use a top film that is at least 2 metres wider and 2 metres longer than the size of your bunker to allow the film to follow the contour of the silage loosely. When using more than one roll, the films should have at least 1 metre overlap.
Top film size recommended:
• 14 m x 50 m
• Flat filling – same as bunker width
• Doming – Add 2 metres width

3. Silostop protective covers (Open net/ Anti-UV cover)
When choosing the cover to protect the Silostop oxygen barrier film you must take into consideration if the film has or hasn’t ultra-violet (UV) sunlight protection. Silostop Max, Black and White-on-black need to be protected from physical damage by a Silostop Open Net. Silostop Orange must be protected by either a standard polyethelene sheet or preferably a Silostop Anti-UV cover, as it does not have built in UV protection. The Silostop Anti-UV cover will last for 6 to 10 years, depending on the regional climate. In the cases where you need more than 1 cover, these should have 1 metre overlap. Covers should be weighed down with Silostop gravel bags - see below.
Size and number of covers
recommended:
• 4 units, each of 15 m x 12 m

4. Silostop Gravel Bags
We advise to weight the silo with touching rows of Silostop Gravel Bags, filled with pea gravel, around the edges of the silo, along any joins and cross hatched all over the silo with no greater gap than 4 metres. Each Gravel Bag is 1 metre in length.
How many bags ?
Perimeter rows:
40 + 12 + 40 + 12 = 104 bags
Additional front to back rows:
2 rows x 40 = 80 bags
Additional side to side rows:
8 rows x 12 = 96 bags
Total number of Gravel Bags recommended:
104 + 80 + 96 = 280

DRIVE-OVER PILES (‘Molehills’ or ‘Mushrooms’)
We recommend a maximum slope of 1 in 4, or 1 metre change in height for each 4 metres change in width or length.

Additional front to back rows:
3 rows x 40 = 120 bags

8 rows x 12 = 96 bags
Total number of Gravel Bags recommended:
108 + 120 + 96 = 324
