Bunker Silos

Example size

Height (H): 3m (9.8ft)

Length (L): 40 m (131ft)

Width (W): 12 m (39ft)

1. Wall Film

To cover the bunker walls, we recommend that you chose a film that it 1.5 m (5ft) to 2 m (6.5ft) higher than the walls, allowing 1 m to cover the floor and 1 m (3ft) to be folded on top of the silage.

Make the top surface as dense and smooth as possible.

2. Silostop top film (Orange or Max)

We recommend that you use a top film that is at least 2 m (6.5ft) wider and 2 m (6.5ft) longer than the size of your bunker to allow the film to follow the contour of the silage loosely. When using more than one roll, the films should have at least 1 m (3ft) overlap.

size recommended:

14 m (46ft) x 50 m (164ft)
Flat filling – same as bunker width
Doming – Add 2 metres width

When applying Silostop films, do not pull film tight. Allow the film to follow the contours of the silage surface. Footwear recommended when applying plastic: flat soled sports shoes (sneakers, trainers, etc), wellington boots (wellies, rain boots), or other non heeled shoes. Avoid the use of heeled footwear as it might damage the film.

3. Silostop protective covers (Premium Net or Anti UV cover)

When choosing the cover to protect the film, you must take into consideration if the film has or hasn’t ultra-violet sunlight protection. Silostop Max need to be protected from physical damage by a Premium Net. Silostop Orange must be protected by an Anti UV cover, as it does not have built in UV protection. In the cases where you need more than 1 cover, these should have 1 metre overlap.

Size and number of covers recommended:
4 units, each of 15m (50ft) x 12m (40ft)

4. Silostop Gravel Bags

We advise to weight the silo with touching rows of Silostop Gravel Bags, filled with pea gravel, around the edges of the silo, along any joins and cross hatched all over the silo with no greater gap than 4 m (13ft). Each Gravel Bag is 1 m (3ft) in length.

How many bags ?
Perimeter rows:
40 + 12 + 40 + 12 = 104 bags
Additional front to back rows:
2 rows x 40 = 80 bags
Additional side to side rows:
8 rows x 12 = 96 bags
Total number of Gravel Bags recommended:
104 + 80 + 96 = 280

At feed out, always keep a row of Silostop gravel bags on the Silostop film at the top front edge of the feed out face.

Drive-over piles (Molehills or Mushrooms)

We recommend a maximum slope of 1 in 4, or 1 m (3ft) change in height for each 4 m (13ft) change in width or length.
