Silostop visits Bridgewater college for a lecture

Lucy Johnson, Regional Sales Manager for Silostop Agri, was invited to speak to a group of agriculture students at Bridgewater & Taunton College to share her knowledge of silage clamp design, silage covering and careers in agriculture.

It is the fourth time we have joined the college, and the students are all studying agriculture or agriculture-related topics.

The college has its land at Rodway Farm, which includes over 200 hectares of arable, pasture and conservation areas.

It also has an advanced on-site dairy unit run with the student's input. The lecture theatres are based adjacent to the farmyard. They are part of a recent investment into the farm to become one of the UK's leading agricultural training and education providers.

‘It is exciting to talk to the students about silage storage and management,’ says Lucy.

‘Students have the great ability to challenge how things might be done traditionally and consider improvements’. She adds.

Topics covered in the talk included the importance of silage clamp design, which covered key areas such as clamp feed-out rates, dimensions and placement, safety on the silage clamp, and understanding silage clamp compliance.

In addition, effective silage covering was a vital part of the presentation.

‘This is an area where a lot of the students in the room had first-hand experience covering silage clamps, and there were sighs across the room when I mentioned the universally hated topic of handling and covering clamps with tyres’.

‘There was significant interest in the use of high oxygen barrier films. Again, the student's interest was in reducing the effort required to cover a clamp. Says Lucy.

The final part of the presentation was a short discussion about careers in agriculture and the supply sector.

‘It was great to see the students' enthusiasm, and it was exciting to see that so many were already working in the industry. '
